Songwriting: the Best Challenge for a Creative Writer
As a singer-songwriter with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music and multiple independent releases (under the name ‘Ally London’), I put my passion for creative writing into practice by telling stories and evoking strong emotions within the margins of song lyrics. I am able to craft words and phrases to adhere to rhythmic meters, rhyme schemes, and sing-ability while effectively communicating the story or feeling I want to express with precision and concision.
Songwriting is my favorite kind of writing because it demands razor-sharp focus and crystal-clear precision from the writer. You have to know exactly what you want to communicate and be economical with your words in a way that other forms don’t require.
I have 17 original songs released on streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you get your music) that you can listen to for samples of my songwriting, but below is one of my favorites: “Pull Back”, released on my debut EP in 2022.
Lyrics
You’re in Chet Baker
You’re in Carolina trees
You’re in the cupboard
When I reach for tea
Driving the wrong way
Not even minding the delay
Cause I feel your eyes on me
Suddenly I don’t feel so free
So I’m sorry for this change
I know one day I’ll disappoint you
Oh, I’m sorry I can’t stay
I know one day you’ll fail me, too
I’m sorry you fell victim to
A signature Ally move
I gotta pull back
When things are going great
My brain gets in the way
So it’s best not to wait
For a disappointing fate
Fight-or-flight shakes me down
So I gotta leave you now
But don’t for a second doubt
I’ll hate this self-imposed drought
So I’m sorry for this change
I know one day I’ll disappoint you
Oh, I’m sorry I can’t stay
I know one day you’ll fail me, too
I’m sorry you fell victim to
A signature Ally move
I gotta pull back
I’ll hear you in the trees
And in bossa nova melodies
I hope you see me in the color green
Though on colors you were never keen
